I know that when the Holocaust was happening, many did not even believe it. The State Department minimized Jews’ concerns, working through Rabbi Stephen Wise, head of the Reform movement and thus most American Jews. Disinformation.
I know that when it was coming, early on, people resisted believing it because they didn’t have information, they were in denial, were Patriots, or they felt they would lose Torah by abandoning the yeshivas.
And I vaguely (very vaguely) know that there is controversy over whether the early Zionists could have done more. But they were largely powerless and no country wanted the Jews.
I do believe that there was “agenda setting” outside of the ordinary man’s hands, and they tried to do the best they could, within the confines of the idea that they had to build a permanent Jewish state to finally escape the pogroms.
After the war, there was much consternation about aiding and abetting former Nazis. But I don’t think anyone would have even conceived that a primary military objective of the Holocaust was occult science — genetic experimentation on Jews and others.
