Documenting The Attack On Journalist Andy Ngo (Updated 7/1/2019, 7:17 AM Eastern Time)

The attack on an independent journalist named Andy Ngo is a turning point in the undeclared civil war our Nation is now experiencing.

Was it attempted murder? See the definition below - "attempted homicide occurs when a person acts deliberately, intentionally, or recklessly with extreme disregard for human life."

The purpose of this thread is to collect the information that I have.

"Attempted murder" is the right terminology for throwing cement at someone's head while hitting them about the head.

The cement can get in the mouth and cause death. One explanation online puts it this way: "If you consume it while it’s still fluid, it will set in your stomach, in your esophagus and throat and unless operated on to remove it will kill you by preventing you from eating and drinking, and likely rupturing your stomach and causing internal bleeding and infection. The risk of death in operation would also be high as the incision would have to be large to match the size of the lump of solid cement."

Additionally, just one punch to the head can kill someone.

This is a screenshot of independent journalist Andy Ngo being interviewed by Portland health personnel after being attacked at a protest on 6/29/19. He described the attack in the video, and I also saw the attack livestream myself.

This is a screenshot showing the cement-colored liquid in his hair and on his face.
Portland Police, 6/29/19, 7:08 p.m., tweeted: "Police have received information that some of the milkshakes thrown today during the demonstration contained quick-drying cement. We are encouraging anyone hit with a substance today to report it to police."

The Gateway Pundit reported that "Video of the attack shows Ngo being beaten by several Antifa attackers and having 'milkshakes' thrown on him.Portland police said the Antifa milkshakes reportedly were made with quick-dry cement. When wet, cement acts as a chemical agent that burns skin."

6/29/19, 11:23 p.m.: Harmeet K. Dillon, Ngo's lawyer, tweeted:
"Update to @MrAndyNgo supporters — he is being admitted to the hospital overnight as a result of a brain bleed." (Here is Ngo's tweet providing the update on his status in the emergency room.)

75% of people who suffer a brain hemorrhage die.

This photo published by @DailyCaller appears to show the immediate aftermath of the attack. Ngo is clearly soaked in this substance.

This is video of the attack itself. It was posted by local newspaper The Oregonian. You can see Ngo bent down and trying to shield himself in this screenshot.
The paper described this as being "roughed up" and characterized the situation as one where "rival demonstrators clashed." You can see one man filming the attack. He isn't wearing a mask. Others are watching.

The attackers close in on Ngo. They are clothed fully in black, their faces concealed.
The attack continues.
This is the moment where the liquid substance is thrown at him.
It appears that someone is spraying him with the liquid - see the stream of liquid coming down from the upper right.
The person doing the spraying is wearing not just a mask, but what looks like facial protective gear and a padded black bodysuit. You can see the person on the right side of your screen with their arm extended.
6/28/19, 5:15 p.m. - Ngo tweeted that he was "nervous" about being attacked while covering the 6/29 rally.

"I am nervous about tomorrow’s Portland antifa rally. They’re promising “physical confrontation” & have singled me out to be assaulted. I went on Tucker Carlson last year to explain why I think they’re doing this: They’re seeking meaning through violence."
In the tweet, he shared a screenshot showing his name.

Here is a closer look at the screenshot, which states: "We realize there are many valid reasons why people cannot engage in physical confrontation." This implies that "physical confrontation" is the default expectation.

Ngo shared photos and videos from  the rally. This tweet has a photo which seems show the white substance being sprayed that day.
These are links to his tweets (Periscopes) leading up to the attack. One is titled "Antifa Portland."

This is the Periscope he posted immediately after the attack, at 4:35 p.m.

And several Tweets.

6/29/19, 4:41 p.m.: "Attacked by antifa. Bleeding. They stole my camera equipment. No police until after. waiting for ambulance . If you have evidence Of attack please help" (sic)

6/29/19, 5:02 p.m.: "On way to hospital. Was beat on face and head multiple times in downtown in middle of street with fists and weapons. Suspects at large."

6/29/19, 4:33 p.m. Video posted by @Jimryan015: "First skirmish I’ve seen. Didn’t see how this started, but @MrAndyNgo got roughed up."
Here is Ngo being continuously sprayed with a thin spray that kind of looks like silly string. Then a shot of him with head bent down, hands up in surrender, walking away.

What does it mean to "milkshake them all?"

:17 in this video shows another angle - the gloves worn when Andy Ngo was bashed in the head.

These are called “assault gloves.”

Someone commented that Ngo in no way "provoked" the assault:

Another commenter noted that police did not assist him.

A third seems to blame Ngo while somehow claiming to not excuse the violence:

"Andy Ngo is someone who antagonizes those he knows will react in a disproportionate way and this exact outcome was inevitable. Everyone knew it. Those who assaulted him, however, are the ones at fault here."

This thread is about covering what is happening and therefore I am sharing another point of view in the following quotes. Do not construe this as endorsement. This person is not endorsing violence against Ngo.

"All his 'journalism' is patriot prayer/proud boy propaganda and spin. All he does is to obfuscate what's really going on as much as possible and get credulous centrists like jake fucking tapper to condemn antifa instead of the fascists"

"I'm not saying he should have been punched, although he certainly deserves it. I'm saying that everyone amplifying it and tut-tutting antifa is doing the same thing as those photojournalists clustering around a barrel fire at a BLM protest or whatever"

Personally I agree with Aaron Lockhart, responding to Raheem Kassam, who shared a petition to the FBI to declare Antifa a domestic terror organization. Lockhart states:

"I'm honestly surprised that the assault of Andy Ngo isn't being investigated federally. He was targeted as a journalist for political reasons in an organized and seemingly premeditated manner."

Meanwhile, someone named Lauren Hudgins says she personally drank the milkshakes and “they contained no cement.” (Punching someone in the head can kill them however. We do not currently know what Ngo’s health status is.)

Separately, this is to note that Ngo lawyer calls the attack “felony assault” not “attempted murder.”

"For all the blue-check jerks out there mocking @MrAndyNgo about being “milkshaked” with unknown substances, do you think this is funny also? This is organized, targeted, FELONY ASSAULT."

Also, someone else has noted that a “brain bleed” is less severe than a “brain hemorrhage," stating:

"Brain bleed ≠ brain hemorrhage. A bleed can be a small bruise under the dura (subdural hematoma) to a massive stroke. Subdural hematoma resolve untreated or require invasive surgery. Aspirin given as close to injury as possible by a trained trauma medic may reduce severity."

This is another video showing a beating of another person. I assume it’s from the same protest, same day (6/29/19) but don’t have more info.

U.S. Ambassador to Germany and friend of Andy Ngo Richard Grenell calls for investigation: "I have asked @TheJusticeDept to investigate this incident in Portland. I can’t just sit by and watch my friend be brutally attacked."

Senator Ted Cruz has also called for an investigation into the mayor of Portland's actions that day: "To federal law enforcement: investigate & bring legal action against a Mayor who has, for political reasons, ordered his police officers to let citizens be attacked by domestic terrorists."
For my part, reading about what's going on, I am trying to determine the Antifa argument here.

So far what I see is:
  • Ngo provoked it deliberately
  • We will defend ourselves
  • Violence against us is ignored.
Has anyone said it was right to smash Ngo in the head? It's not clear - this depends partly on what the meaning of "milkshaking" someone is.

Why investigate this one incident so exhaustively? For my part, the idea is to unify people around the concept of shared facts. We can’t rely on external authorities or the media alone, and our worlds are so walled off that we literally cannot speak across them anymore.

This is a separate matter than judging Antifa. Anyone exercising their First Amendment rights should be protected, period.

Here is an update on Ngo's health, as of 6/30/19, 6:55 pm (you see Tweets in your own local time I believe; mine is Eastern): Malkin tweets that he is still in the hospital.

I appreciate her motives but I dislike it when people politicize everything instead of trying to understand first. Her efforts seem noble, but people who politicize events divide us yet more. Because my main concern is national security. And I feel like there is a concerted effort to divide us from one another, success at which makes us ripe for invasion.

Essentially, what the enemy does is they come into our country and ally themselves with a pissed off group. Then they turn the pissed off group against everyone else. The pissed off group pisses off everyone else and soon enough it’s civil war.

As a sociologist I want to know where the mayor is, where the police are, etc. to stop the violence.

I don’t expect individual people to stop it, because they affiliate with groups (“community”) that surround and brainwash (“love bomb”) them. There HAS to be a bad guy.

If we as a society continue to polarize, defining any group as domestic terrorists will lose meaning completely. It will be “your opinion” not an established fact.

Similarly law enforcement will become (it’s already becoming) YOUR police not MY police, etc. We see border enforcement agents accused of being criminals and the New York Times actually publishes a call to dox them!

Can we trust that the unknown substance thrown at Ngo will be tested?

The people who were at the protest likely know who doused Ngo with the substance as well as who punched him in the head with that deadly looking glove.

Will this be investigated seriously enough that their names are given up to police?

Wanted to go back and add that there were 3 protests on Saturday.
  • 1 “involving” the Proud Boys
  • 1 with Haley Adams and the “HimToo movement” (conservative)
  • Counterprotest that included Rose City Antifa
We could probably have an extended discussion about the ideologies of these groups but I am not going to do that here.

Here is a really good meditation on the Ngo situation and what it means for the current state of affairs.

Basically we are either going to decide to be normal or we are going to have all out civil war with endless justifications for the terror.

If we are going to be normal this means we have to stop making assumptions and focus on the facts.

We can’t infer things we don’t know and demonize people we don’t know.

Speaking as a Trump supporter - I believe we have to try to understand other views even if it’s hard. Because that will allow us to stay centered and focus our energy where it matters, which is the system.

I guess I will stop this thread now. I hope Ngo is ok.

P.S. Yes, it does appear that Ted Wheeler (photo via Wikipedia) is both the mayor and the police commissioner of Portland.

Updates 7/1/19:

#1: Thread by Thomas Wictor

Thomas Wictor has published a thread stating that the feds filmed the assault. I am a little concerned that they did not actually stop the assault, since Ngo may die.

Wictor: "The Department of Justice has the goods on Portland. Excellent."

#2: Information obtained by Town Hall yesterday 6/30 (this is indirect information because the reporter's tweets are now protected.).

Also in the Town Hall article is an update on Ngo's condition, as of 5:48 p.m. Eastern Time. His lawyer says "he is recovering in the hospital under monitoring for the brain bleed. We hope he will be released soon once medically cleared."
